In truth, it all started a century ago, in May 1898, when images revealed the astounding imprint of the tortured body, rudely awakening interest in this then-forgotten relic. The debate can be summed up succinctly thus: does this shroud contain the imprint of the body of Christ or not? It is easy to understand the excitement of those who waited feverishly for the presentation in 1998. They hoped that a favorable analysis would mean experts could finally refute its medieval dating, and definitively attribute the Turin shroud to Christ.
